"watercolor country"

in this

watercolor country

we got lost but

not enough to

ask each other

what was wrong

/ there were

more dogs barking

that first night

than I expected and

the rain fell heavy like

words we could not understand

but wanted to dance

under /

wanted to catch

on our tongues,

to get caught in this flood

until our colors bled

into a city

already so full

that we find

our place in narrow

streets /

hanging from clotheslines

with tired arms /

I lost you in the vibrancy,

but I will listen for you at night,

for your broken words falling

between the howls

of animals

I did not expect
